This surgical intervention is typically sought by individuals who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their mons pubis due to excess fat, sagging skin, or prominence.

WHAT IS MONSPLASTY?

Monsplasty is a type of mons pubis surgery that reduces or reshapes the fatty area above the genitals, known as the mons pubis. This area can naturally appear more prominent due to genetics, weight, age, or hormones. Monsplasty helps flatten and contour this region by removing excess fat and skin, creating a smoother and more balanced appearance.

WHY CHOOSE MONSPLASTY AS PART OF GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE?

For many trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals, the appearance of the mons pubis can be a source of gender dysphoria. A fuller or more prominent mons area may not align with how someone sees or feels about their body. Monsplasty can help reduce this discomfort by creating a flatter, more affirming contour that better reflects a person’s gender identity.

This procedure is often performed with, before or after other gender-affirming surgeries, such as metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, or body contouring procedures. When combined, these surgeries can support a more cohesive and satisfying outcome that helps individuals feel more at home in their bodies.

We recognize that gender-affirming care is not the same for everyone. Whether you’re undergoing a full surgical transition or seeking one specific change, we provide respectful, individualized support for people of all genders and backgrounds.

Monsplasty may be included as part of comprehensive gender-affirming care to help reduce gender dysphoria and improve physical comfort and confidence. [2]

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MONSPLASTY?

Monsplasty may be a good option for transmasc, non-binary, and other gender-diverse individuals who want to reduce or reshape the mons pubis area. This procedure is often chosen by people who feel that the area above their genitals is too full or prominent, which can cause discomfort or make them feel disconnected from their bodies.

Common reasons people consider monsplasty include:

1). Feeling self-conscious or dysphoric about a bulging mons area [1]

2). Experiencing discomfort in tight clothing, such as pants or underwear

3). Including monsplasty as part of a larger surgical plan, such as gender-affirming bottom surgery

Because each person’s goals, anatomy, and transition path are unique, we always recommend an individualized consultation. During this meeting, our surgical team will talk with you about your needs, review your options, and help create a plan that feels right for you.

THE MONSPLASTY PROCEDURE: WHAT TO EXPECT

Monsplasty is a safe and straightforward surgery that removes extra fat or skin from the mons pubis, the area just above the genitals. The goal is to flatten and smooth this area, improving comfort and helping your body match how you feel inside.

How the Procedure Is Performed

During surgery, a small incision is made just above the pubic area. Through this incision, the surgeon removes excess fat and may tighten or trim loose skin. [1] This helps reduce any bulging or fullness in the mons area. The incision is then carefully closed with stitches for minimal scarring.

Anesthesia and Surgical Time

Monsplasty is typically done as outpatient same-day surgery under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on your overall plan and comfort level. [3]

MONSPLASTY RECOVERY AND ADVANTAGES

Monsplasty can enhance self-confidence and alleviate discomfort caused by clothing friction or physical activities.

MONSPLASTY RECOVERY

What will recovery from monsplasty entail?

Recovery from monsplasty is fairly routine and rapid. Most patients will require prescription pain medications for several days along with ample rest. and will be able to return to work or school within about one week.

RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE

Healing after monsplasty is usually smooth and manageable with proper care. Most people can return to light daily activities within a few days, but full recovery may take a few weeks depending on your body and whether the surgery was combined with other procedures. [3]

Typical Recovery Timeline

In the first few days, it’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the mons area. Pain is usually mild and can be managed with medication. You may be asked to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support healing. [3]

Most people can return to non-strenuous activities in about 1 to 2 weeks, but it’s best to avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise, or sexual activity for at least 4 to 6 weeks or until your surgeon gives the go-ahead. [1]

Tips for Healing

  • Rest as much as possible in the first few days
  • Keep the surgical area clean and dry
  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions about wound care and medications
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, as they can slow down healing
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to reduce pressure on the area

When to Contact Your Surgeon

It’s important to attend all follow-up appointments and call your care team if you notice signs of infection like increased redness, warmth, drainage, or fever.
